Clean and green

Joe Paiva spent a decade building homes; now he wants to clean them. That, and change the way we think about cleaning our homes. At the beginning of October, Paiva, who has worked in residential construction, officially launches EcoClean, a cleaning company using 100 percent “green” cleaning products.

There are two main reasons the 33-year-old has developed EcoClean: He noticed a lack of good professional cleaning services, and he saw a bigger lack in good professional cleaning services that don’t use noxious, harmful chemicals.

“I want to do it right. I want to do it 100 percent clean, sorry, I mean green,” he says.

A slip of the tongue? Perhaps not.

“Green is the future,” says the Portuguese native, who lives in Somerville.

“I want to do this for the safety of my clients and for my employees,” he continues, noting studies linking brain and other cancers to cleaning chemicals.

“I also want to educate people. They don’t know what they’re using, because in the U.S., not all ingredients have to be listed. So, something says natural with 40 percent baking soda and 30 percent vinegar, but there’s a hidden percentage that you don’t know.”

EcoClean’s website will eventually include a database of effective, safe products that Paiva’s researched and developed himself.

There’s another reason Paiva’s started EcoClean — he wants a healthier world.

“I have a six-year-old son and I want to do this for him. He’s the future.”
