Comfort food for the inner city

A few local figures, plus nearly 700 other guests, gathered at the Shaw Conference Centre Thursday for a timeless lunch of mac and cheese.

Mayor Stephen Mandel, Premier Ed Stelmach and Oilers head coach Pat Quinn were on hand for the 15th Annual Mac and Cheese Luncheon in support of the Inner City Agencies Foundation.

Garth Von Hagen, ICAF chair, said he hopes that the fundraising meal, along with sponsorships, will raise about $125,000 that will go directly to various organizations.

“Our agencies do a variety of services,” said Von Hagen. “So anything from addictions counselling to school lunch programs to health care. It goes directly into street-level programs to help support what the agencies do.”

ICAF is a joint initiative of seven different downtown core organizations, including the Bissell Centre, E4C and the Edmonton Inner City Housing Society.

The luncheon helps wind down Inner City Awareness Week, which runs from March 21-27.

The week started off with the Inner City Roast Beef Dinner for the poverty stricken in Edmonton.
