Committee to view soccer turf report

Calgary may soon be able to host regional, national and international soccer tournaments pending approval from city council.

On Wednesday the Community and Protective Services committee will look over a plan encouraging the completion of artificial turf fields that will enable a higher class of competition. They will decide whether or not to pass that plan to city council.

“It will definitely improve our capacity to provide a great soccer experience for kids,” said Ald. Bob Hawkesworth. “It would go a long way in the city being able to sponsor tournaments. Certainly it would make Calgary a much more desirable place in hosting tourna-ments than we are now.”

The Calgary Sport Council, who prepared the report, hope the artificial turf fields will be added to existing sites in Glenmore, Optimist, Forest Lawn, Southland and Foothills athletic parks.
