Those hot summer days are coming to an end, which means commuters can soon look forward to waiting outside on the frigid T platforms until a toasty train comes pulling up.
But before winter comes crashing to the Bay State, the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail deserves some recognition, according to them, for their record-breaking summer commutes.
As of September 1, MBCR only received 16 total passenger complaints regarding air conditioning for the entire summer, the lowest number ever for them.
Marking the fifth consecutive year that the commuter rail operator delivered “a near perfect record for cool commutes,” despite working with older coaches, this summer was their best so far, according to reports from the commuter service.
All 410 coaches received a comprehensive, rigorous preseason assessment to identify defects and potential failures, which resulted in approximately 280 repairs.
With approximately 350 coaches in operation each day:
· MBCR delivered 99.997% air conditioning in-service reliability for the 2011 cooling season
· The average number of hot coaches in service on any day during the 2011 cooling season was 0.909
· MBCR’s air conditioning “failure rate” was one quarter of 1% (.0026) compared with the industry standard failure rate of 3%
·MBCR experienced a 32% reduction is air conditioning service requests from 2010
·As of September 1, MBCR received 16 total passenger complaints regarding air conditioning for the entire summer, the lowest number ever.
·148 major coach repairs, including 50 installation of 50 rebuilt units to increase reliability
·178 in-service repairs (off-site repairs in response to any known issues of concerns)
·29 system rests that resulted from electrical overload
·Repair or replacement of 13 compressors that failed during the season
