Could the Herd welcome back an old friend?

The Halifax Mooseheads may end up with another import option this season after Tomas Knotek was cut by a Finnish SM-Liiga team yesterday.

Knotek, who was the Mooseheads’ captain last season and has won the club’s past two most valuable player awards, was released from a tryout contract with HPK Hameenlinna.

Since the Mooseheads aren’t having much luck getting top import pick Martin Frk to Halifax, Knotek would give them another option — either for their roster or to trade — if he wanted to return to the QMJHL for a fourth season.

“It’s good to have options,” was all Mooseheads head coach and general manager Cam Russell would say when reached on the matter.

The International Ice Hockey Federation denied last week Frk’s transfer to Halifax from the Czech Republic because he has a pro contract with HC Karlovy Vary.

But the Mooseheads would have to relinquish Frk’s rights to bring Knotek back, and owner Bobby Smith said last Friday he is still hoping to negotiate Frk’s release from Karlovy Vary.
