Council considers Canal repairs

A proposal for the long-awaited repair and redesign of trails surrounding the Shubenacadie Canal Lakes Waterway is expected to come before City Hall this week.

Marine Drive, Valley and Canal Community Council is requesting Halifax regional councillors approve city staff’s two recommended master plans. The first is to transform the former Starr property into a linear heritage park, linking the Trans Canada trail between Sullivan’s Pond and the Dartmouth waterfront. The second involves maximizing Lake Banook’s potential as a world-class paddling venue, and the surrounding lands, which include cultural and historic sites.

Coun. David Hendsbee (Preston-Lawrencetown-Chezzetcook) says the world canoe and kayak championships, to be held on Lake Banook in late summer 2009, are a catalyst of the project.

“The world will be on our lakes, and it would be nice to have the link to those lakes as well,” Hendsbee said.

The intention is for the project to be considered in the budget deliberations, which begin tomorrow.

The proposal was slated for discussion at last week’s council meeting, but Hendsbee moved to defer the item, pending a Harbour East Community Council report.
