Almost unanimously — but not quite — Toronto City Council has backed the Golden Horseshoe bid for the 2015 Pan American Games.
Coun. Michael Walker, the only councillor to oppose Toronto’s bid for the 2008 Olympics, was also the only one to vote against the PanAm bid in the 37-1 vote.
Others followed Mayor David Miller’s urging to get behind the $1.4 billion bid.
“The infrastructure that will be used for the Pan-Am Games predominantly will be in Toronto,” Miller said
Toronto’s biggest facility will be at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus, which will get an aquatics centre and sports institute.
“We probably should call it the Scarborough 2015 Pan American Games bid,” Miller joked.
That’s not all Scarborough will get, he said.
“One of the things I think is important about that venue … is that it will force the province of Ontario to ensure that we build the Scarborough-Malvern light rapid transit line,” Miller said.
