More details were released yesterday after three people died in a horrific crash south of Leduc Tuesday night.

The three-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 2A around 6:30 p.m.

It’s believed the driver of a Dodge Ram 3500 welding truck veered off the highway onto the shoulder, and sharply over-corrected, driving head-on into oncoming northbound traffic.

Two cars collided with the truck, instantly killing all three passengers in one of the cars.

The victims are 60-year-old Ian McGillivary from Surrey, B.C., his 53-year-old wife, Rita McGillivary, and her 77-year-old mother Maria Zetsen of Camrose.

The driver of the second car walked away from the collision unharmed.

Police believe the driver of the truck was drunk at the time of the crash. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

While no charges have been laid, Leduc RCMP Const. Jodi Heidinger said police aren’t ruling out the possibility.

A day earlier, Leduc RCMP revealed statistics that as many drunk driving charges have been laid in the first six months of 2009 as in all of 2008.
