Crews hard at work as market’s big day nears

The Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market is set to open on Saturday but construction crews are still hard at work finishing off the environmentally friendly building at Pier 20.

“I think it looks great, it’s just not finished,” said Sarah Schwarz, who owns Creperie Mobile.

She didn’t have to decide to stay at the old Brewery Market or move: she’ll have locations at both markets.

“For us, it’s never been a question because we need the old location with the kitchen and the new place is just exciting.”

She knows many customers who are anxiously awaiting the new market.

“I know for lots of people the old market is too crowded with no space to stand and chat,” she said.

“Some customers are not that excited because they love the old market.”

It was an easy decision for flower seller Liz Horling: she’ll have an overhang outside at the new market.

“It’s time for a little change.”

She said there are no hard feelings between vendors who are staying and those who are leaving.
“I think it’s still pretty relaxed.”

Open Saturday only
The market will be open Saturdays only until the building is finished. It will be open Saturday, Sunday and Wednesdays after that.
