The sentencing of an Avondale man convicted of hate crimes has been postponed until the new year.
Justin Rehberg, 20, will now be sentenced at Hants County provincial court in Windsor on Jan. 11 for his part in burning a cross on the lawn of an interracial couple last February.
Both he and his 21-year-old brother Nathan have been found guilty of inciting hatred in the incident. They are also both guilty of criminal harassment.
Nathan Rehberg will be sentenced on Jan. 10, the day before Justin is to receive his sentence.
Shane Howe, who is black, and Michelle Lyon, who is white, awoke in the morning last Feb. 21 to a 2.5-metre cross, complete with a noose, burning on their lawn.
Howe said when he exited the house to investigate, somebody shouted “Die, n—-r, die.”
The Rehbergs are distant cousins to Lyon.
Justin Rehberg has testified the cross burning was an attempt at vengeance, alleging the couple spread rumours about himself and his brother.
