We have savoured every anniversary dinner so far at Culina Mill Creek, but we were lured north of the river this year by rave reviews for the Culina Highlands brunch. With 10:30 reservations, we loitered in Mandolin Books for a half hour among the amazing finds and fresh-brewed Catfish coffee before taking our seats in the funky little bistro.

I was sold on the brunch special ($16) chalked on the overhead menu board before I even sat down — all I needed was a mimosa ($5) to make my anniversary brunch complete.

We had a bit of a wait before our meals arrived, but the result dwarfed my wildest expectations. The hash browns were good. The striped heirloom tomatoes with mascarpone cheese were better. The herb-infused scrambled eggs were excellent, but those delicately seasoned, handmade sausage patties were utterly amazing!

Serving mostly local products, backed by exceptional kitchen and serving staff, Culina Highlands deserves to be one of your favourite places, too.
