Dear Hollywood: Superhero movies may actually kill Emma Thompson

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 02: Emma Thompson places a giant paw sticker on the outside of the Shell Building on September 2, 2015 in London, England. The sticker contains the names of some of the 7 million people who have signed up to the arctic movement. As part of the protest, 64 activists and puppeteers have also manoeuvred a giant polar bear puppet the size of a double decker bus to rest just metres away from Shell's front entrance. It's intended the polar bear titan will remain fixed there until Shell's Arctic drilling window ends later this month. (Photo by Ben Pruchnie/Getty Images)

This week’s turning out to be the time for British people to get hyperbolic about Marvel’s popular web-slinger. After former “Amazing Spider-Man” star Andrew Garfield referred to the blockbuster experience as “like a prison,” fellow stately Brit Emma Thompson is sounding off on superhero films — and Spider-Man in particular.

“I loved the original ‘Superman’ with Chris Reeve because there was a real tongue-in-cheek-ness to it. But after a while, you do get a tiny bit cynical about it,” she tells Vulture’s Kyle Buchanan.”The fact that I know they’re going to win out in the end has now slightly interfered with my continuing to go to those movies. If I see yet another Spider-Man, I’m going to have to actually hang myself.” That’s … a bit severe.

“I can’t do it anymore! They’re all marvelous, but how many times can you make this franchise, for crying out loud?” You know, hyperbole or not, she makes a great point.
