Discoveries of the deep blue

They ventured into undiscovered depths and came back with new species of ocean life.

An international crew of 27 scientists on board the Canadian Coast Guard ship Hudson returned to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography yesterday.

They spent the last three weeks taking samples and photographing in waters off of Newfoundland.

Several of these areas have never been seen by human eyes before.

“I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and this is the first time I’ve noticed that many new species,” said Kevin MacIsaac, a taxonomist (someone who names things).

“It is very unusual.”

While scientists collected new species of coral and sponges, the geologists on board made some discoveries of their own.

These changes show how climate change is affecting the ocean and its creatures.
