Residents of HRM may soon be able to stuff their leaves and other yard waste into blue bags before hauling them to the curb.
Homeowners are already allowed to place leaves in clear, orange or paper bags for collection. Last night, Coun. Linda Mosher put forward a motion asking staff to look into allowing blue bags to become a fourth option.
“They’re less expensive than the ones that we now require for leaves … and so many people already have them sitting in their house,” she said. “Anything we can do to enhance diversion of waste from landfills is good.”
Other councillors said changing the system will only lead to confusion.
“We have a system that works,” argued Coun. Bob Harvey. “No one in my district has ever asked for this.”
In the end, council sent the matter to the municipality’s solid waste committee for further debate.
