Donnelly holds B.C. seat for New Democrats

New Democrat Fin Donnelly won the federal byelection in the riding of New Westminster-Coquitlam yesterday.

Donnelly, speaking at the Fraser River Discovery Centre after defeating Conservative candidate Diana Dilworth last night, said he plans to deliver a political message about the looming Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) to the prime minister as soon as he gets to Ottawa.

“I am going to let Stephen Harper and the Conservatives know, that the people of New Westminster, Coquitlam and Port Moody, spoke loud and clear. And they are not happy about the HST,” Donnelly said.

He said he plans to stay in Coquitlam.

“I don’t see that I am going to be leaving Coquitlam at all, in fact it’s just my role that is changing. I am very excited about representing the town of Coquitlam as a member of parliament, so I just see my role changing,” he said. The byelection was one of four held across Canada yesterday.
