‘Don’t Turn Out the Lights’: Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block teamed up?

In realm of pop music supergroups, how to classify NKOTBSB, the “aw, the hell with it” collaboration between ’90s boy bands New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys? Nobody here is operating at the top of their powers, so they’re not Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. No individual here is remarkably more famous than the others, so they’re not Derek & The Dominoes or The Raconteurs. And the members’ past work is hardly the stuff of legend, so they’re certainly not The Traveling Wilburys.

No, the band with the highest similarity score to NKOTBSB is something like Velvet Revolver: Graying former heartthrobs more than a decade past their peak, dressing up their old sound in today’s slick production. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Heck, give credit to NKOTBSB for doing it so well; their first single “Dont Turn Out the Lights,” which dropped today, sounds like nothing so much as a typical Enique Iglesias club banger.

Take a listen to it below, and then remark on how the cover art was apparently influenced by the poster for “The Expendables.”
