Dunbrack women back on top

Halifax Dunbrack Rooms Plus will get another crack at a national gold medal.

Dunbrack captured its second straight EastLink Premiership provincial women’s soccer title last night at Mainland Common with a convincing 3-1 triumph over Cape Breton United.

After winning bronze at nationals last year, they’re eager to go back for more in October.

“Our goal was to get gold (last year), and a lot of us are back from that team,” said Dunbrack captain Teresa Morrison.

“It’s good to get back there and have another chance.”

Morrison, the league MVP, scored on a penalty kick in the third minute and Leanne Huck added to the damage in the 40th. Although a Cape Breton goal from Krista Rudderham in the 50th minute planted a seed of doubt, Ally Read put the game away just eight minutes later.

“I was a little bit nervous (when they scored),” Morrison admitted. “But we knew the next goal was the biggest goal to get, and we got it.”

Dunbrack doesn’t have far to travel for nationals, with Charlottetown, P.E.I., playing host from Oct. 6 to 11.
