Dziekanski’s mother calls for independent investigation into son’s death

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Robert Dziekanski’s mother says she has “lost faith” in the Canadian justice system and wants the B.C. government to launch a new investigation into her son’s death.

Zofia Cisowski says the police investigation into what happened when four RCMP officers confronted her son at Vancouver’s airport and stunned him with a Taser focused on blaming Dziekanski.

The report by Crown prosecutors who decided not to charge the officers involved focused on Dziekanski’s fear of flying and raised the possibility he might have been an alcoholic.

Cisowski, who was attending the ongoing public inquiry into Dziekasnki’s death, says she wants a special prosecutor appointed to conduct a new investigation.

She says recent testimony at the inquiry about his life in Poland is irrelevant to what happened at the airport on Oct. 14, 2007.

Crown prosecutors have said they would need new evidence from RCMP before they would re-examine the case, but Cisowski says the police can’t be trusted to investigate themselves.
