When the first Princess Diaries movie premiered in 2001, Mia Thermopolis, her eclectic friend Lilly, grungey love interest, artistic mother, stoic with a heart of gold driver and royally badass grandmother captured everyone’s hearts and immediately became a success. Then, when the second movie premiered a few years later audiences still flooded to the theaters to see what happened to Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Therm…. well you get it. Now over a decade since the second installment came out, Anne Hathaway has teased that Princess Diaries 3 may be making more progress than you think.

Anne Hathaway was on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live on Thursday night and chatted with Cohen about the progress of Princess Diaries 3. “There is a script for the third movie that is so cute,” Hathaway said while the audience gasped.
This isn’t the first time a script for the third installment in the royal series has been brought up. In 2017 Meg Cabot, author of the Princess Diaries books (what the movie is based on) revealed to Entertainment Weekly that there was a script out there. A year before director Gary Marshall also discussed a third script being in the works. Hathaway was pregnant with her son at the time and sadly Marshall passed away later that year.
The once-Genovian Queen herself also hinted at the return. Andrews spoke to Buzzfeed in 2017 about the pending project, “Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to I would very willingly and happily do it” she said.
Now with Mia herself confirming the progress, it seems that all of our foot-popping dreams may officially come true. But it’s not just Hathaway that wants the third film to happen.” I want to do it. Julie wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen,” she said.
Other cast members such as Mandy Moore (Lana Thomas), Heather Matarazzo (Lilly Moscovitz) and Chris Pine (Nicholas Devereaux) also mentioned being open to parts in the third installment.
Hathaway did say that there may be a little bit of a wait, but not for any unfortunate reasons- they simply just want the third installment to be as perfect as the first two. “It’s just we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it” she said.
So what’s in store for Princess Diaries 3? No plot or intimate details have been revealed yet, but at least the cast is on board and a script is out there. We just have to patiently wait for the perfect time.
