Euthanizing pets to continue: City report

Edmonton’s animal control facility shouldn’t stop euthanizing pets, said a city report released Thursday.

“The number of stray and unwanted pets always exceeds the long-term holding capacity of any open admission facility,” the report reads.

It was determined that though it may stimulate fundraising it wouldn’t be realistic to stop putting down sheltered animals in a city the size of Edmonton.

Of 7,887 animals taken into the Edmonton Animal Services pound in 2008, 2,618 were reclaimed, 2,807 sent to rescues and 1,752 were euthanized.

The pound offers identifiable animals that aren’t claimed to the Edmonton Humane Society for adoption after 10 days, and unidentifiable after three days.

Last year, the Edmonton Humane Society took in 8,066 animals. Of those, 4,635 were adopted and 2,467 were euthanized.
