Some of the best break dancers in the country will show off their moves at the Red Bull BC One 2018 in Boston.
The competition, known as a cypher, will feature a number of notable b-boys, including Illinois’ P Nut, New York’s Pop, as well as Philadelphia’s Box Won, Ookie and SupaJosh. The Hub’s own Brian Pistols is also set to compete this weekend, and he couldn’t be happier to throw down in his hometown.
“To compete in such a high caliber event right in Boston is very exciting for me and it is an honor for me to represent home,” Brian Pistols tells Metro. “Last year I traveled to Chicago to compete in the Red Bull BC One open qualifier so to be able to wake up in my own home on the day of is a blessing. Not having to shake off a long car ride or flight is always a plus.”
The Lynn native believes the Bay State has a vibrant breaker scene, which is why Boston makes for the perfect location for this weekend’s event.
“Massachusetts’ breaking scene, in my opinion, is in a very great place,” says Brian Pistols. “As a community leader in the scene, I see a lot of inspired and motivated breakers and I take it as a responsibility to make sure we have quality events to ensure that this culture gets passed on the righteous way for the people in our scene to thrive.”

What is Red Bull BC One 2018 in Boston?
Red Bull BC One is one of the biggest b-boy competition in the world, featuring thousands of dancers who go head-to-head, showing off their break dancing skills in order to win a spot in the finals. This weekend’s event will allow local competitors the chance to throw down for a chance to make it into the top 16.
Those who make it into the top 16 will face off for a panel of judges in a live-streamed competition that will decide one winner, who’ll be flown to the the Last Chance Cypher in Zürich on Sept. 27. The winner of that event will then go on to represent the U.S. at the World Final on Sept. 29.
In addition to the competition the Red Bull BC One 2018 event in Boston will also pay tribute to Boston’s Valentin “Float” Becerril, a local breaker and member of the Floor Lords who passed away on Aug. 3. Proceeds from the event will be donated to his family.
When is Red Bull BC One 2018 in Boston?
The competition will take place on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Royale Boston, located at 279 Tremont St. The festivities will kick off at 4 p.m., with the open qualifiers competition beginning at 5 p.m. A tribute to Float will take place at 7 p.m., followed by the start of the live-streamed, top 16 competition at 7:10 p.m. A winner is expected to be crowned by 10 p.m. For more information, check out bcone.redbull.com.
