The multi-hectare expansion of Hasting Park’s green space and carnival grounds comes mostly at the expense of parking, which is set to significantly shrink under council’s approved plan.
A yearly influx of summer guests to the PNE and Playland has long been a source of contention for local residents, who either try to profit from or discourage visitors from parking on their property to escape the park’s quickly filled lots.
According to Coun. Raymond Louie, the city’s tentative plan is to construct a large, underground parking lot in the park’s northwest corner, in the area of Hastings Racetrack.
“That’s our preference, but it will depend on whether we can get the funding,” he said.
