Fate of Shafia family now in jury’s hands

KINGSTON, Ont. – The fate of three people accused of killing their family over honour is now in the hands of a jury in Kingston, Ont.

A Montreal couple is charged, along with their adult son, with killing their three daughters and the first wife in their polygamous marriage.

The jury has heard evidence from dozens of Crown witnesses and some of the accused themselves over about 10 weeks and began its deliberations today.

Tooba Yahya, 42, and her husband Mohammad Shafia, 58, are charged alongside their eldest son, Hamed, 21, and have each pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder.

They’re accused of killing Shafia sisters, Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, over family honour.

The bodies were found June 30, 2009, in a car at the bottom of a canal in Kingston, where the family had stopped on their way home from a trip to Niagara Falls.
