About 25 people marked World Aids Day with a candlelight vigil last night to raise awareness for a bill they say will help sway the fight against AIDS in Africa.
Gathering in front of the southwest Calgary office of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the group pledged support for grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa and the children they care for that have been orphaned by AIDS.
Spokesperson Hilary Elliott said the group, which is affiliated with the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign, hopes to see Bill C-393 passed when it is presented in the House of Commons in the coming weeks.
“It would allow generic drugs to get from Canada to Africa in a more effective way,” Elliott said. “Right now, the legislation is so flawed.”
“Generally the Conservatives have not been very supportive,” she said. “It’s possible and that’s why we continue to fight.”
