Final farewell for slain couple

Hands limp by his sides and eyes fixed on the grass just steps from where his parents were lowered into the ground yesterday afternoon, Qaiss Shahghasy said a million questions were racing through his mind.

The one he most wants answered is: “Why?”

He wants to know why his parents were killed last week, stabbed to death in a random, unprovoked knife attack at a Brampton strip mall. But he said if he ever comes face to face with the killer, he wouldn’t know what to say.

“My words won’t bring them back,” he said. “My tears won’t bring them back. My anger won’t bring them back. What happened makes no sense. But like my dad would say, ‘Things like this, there are two ways to deal with them: man up, or give up and let everything take over.’ So I’m manning up.”

Then Shahghasy turned to face more than 200 mourners, some who had flown in from Australia and the United States, to bid farewell to his parents at Brampton Memorial Gardens, near Bovaird Drive and Chinguacousy Road.
