Finishing touches on highway work will cause severe traffic

Although the Interstate 93 bridge project that left lanes closed during summer weekends is finished ahead of schedule, there is still work to be done.

Drivers can expect additional delays over the weekend as work crews begin final installations of a new layer of pavement on I-93 North.

The project extends from exit 29 in Somerville to exit 34 Stoneham, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s website.

The 93Fast14 project replaced bridges all along the interstate, and now the finishing touches are being applied.

The work will require lane closures on 93 North and South on Friday, August 19 at 8 p.m. and continuing through Monday, August 22 at 5 a.m.

There will be varying lane restrictions in each direction during the weekend over a 6-mile segment between, according to MassDOT’s website.

Traffic is expected to be “extremely heavy” throughout the duration of the weekend, particularly during daytime and early evening hours, according to MassDOT.

Avoid the jam

MassDOT “strongly recommends” using alternate routes:

I-495

I-95 (Route 128)

Route 1

I-90
