Fire rages at Con Ed plant in Brooklyn

A fire broke out at a Con Ed substation in DUMBO, Brooklyn this afternoon, sending flames shooting high into the air and resulting in dramatic plumes of thick black smoke wafting over the Brooklyn waterfront.

The fire broke out just after 5 p.m. Several residents in the neighborhood called in to 911 reporting that they heard and felt a massive explosion, according to an FDNY spokesman.

Residents reported that they felt their buildings shake.

Con Ed spokesman Chris Olert denied there was an explosion, however. He said a fire broke out in a piece of reactor equipment in the station, located on 89 John Street.

There were no injuries in the fire and no customers were affected by power loss.

The fire was under control by 6:30 according the FDNY.
