Fired up Red Sox win 2-of-3 from Yankees

The Red Sox tried to give GM Ben Cherington full reason to believe that they were a team capable of capturing a wild card spot in this year’s AL playoffs Sunday night at Yankee Stadium.

In one of their best wins of the season, Boston beat their arch-rivals, 3-2, in a game which saw manager Bobby Valentine and pitcher Josh Beckett (who had the night off) get tossed in extra innings.

Pedro Ciriaco’s bloop to right field plated Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the 10th inning, to give Boston the 3-2 lead it would walk away with. Ryan Sweeney had the Red Sox other RBIs in the second inning via a two-run double.

Alfredo Aceves battled for 2.1 innings to pick up the win.

Valentine and Beckett were arguing with umpires after a ball seemed to hit batter Will Middlebrooks. Valentine came out to argue with home plate umpire Brian O’Nora and Beckett was tossed from the visitors dugout by third base ump Tom Hallion.
