Firefighter hurt battling Sandy Hill apartment blaze

Police and firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that injured a firefighter and caused $1.8 million in damages to a low-rise apartment in Sandy Hill Wednesday night.

At 6:32 p.m., firefighters were called to a fire at a three-storey building at 60 Cobourg St., Ottawa Fire Capt. Alex Davey said Thursday.

Within minutes, firefighters called in a second-alarm fire and by 7:26 p.m., it escalated to a fourth alarm fire, said Davey.

“We wanted to make sure we had lots of people there so we could help,” he said.

The occupants of the 24-unit building were relocated.

The fire caused $1 million in damages to the building and about $800,000 to the contents.

While the fire did not spread to all three floors, smoke affected the entire building.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. He was not taken to hospital.

While the fire was deemed not suspicious, the cause remains under investigation, Davey said.
