Former West Vancouver police chief Kash Heed received a rock-star reception from supporters last night as he won his Vancouver-Fraserview riding with just under half of all votes.
Supporters, carrying signs and chanting his name, gathered at Fraserview Hall in South Vancouver last night to celebrate the 53-year-old’s victory, which was announced around 9:30 p.m.
Heed received 49.45 per cent of votes, Gabriel Yiu of the NDP received 45.55 per cent and Jodie Emery of the Green party received 4.45 per cent.
Heed arrived with his wife and daughter and began his acceptance speech by dedicating his win to his mother. He then thanked his supporters.
“I will not let you down, I promise,” he said, asking them to provide constant feedback via email and telephone calls.
And when things are looking grim or doubtful, he said to remember three words made famous by a politician south of us: “Yes we can.”
Before joining the West Vancouver police in August 2007, Heed served as a Vancouver police officer for nearly three decades.
He headed the drug squad and gang violence task force and was instrumental in advancing the department’s CompStat program, used to track crime.
Heed lives in Richmond with his wife and daughter.
