Four-year-old uninjured in ‘horrific’ gang-style shooting

A four-year-old boy was taken to hospital apparently uninjured after surviving a gang-style shooting in a suburban Surrey neighbourhood Monday that left a woman dead.

The woman was driving an off-white Cadillac coupe southbound through the intersection of 148th Street and 96 Avenue at 10:30 a.m. when she was shot and killed.

Cpl. Dale Carr, a spokesman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, called the attack “horrific” and “beyond comprehension.”

“We don’t know whether the shots came from another vehicle or if it was someone laying in wait, or what,” Carr said.

The vehicle continued south on 148th Street about a half block, listing to the left before it came to a rest in a driveway against a cedar hedge. At noon Monday, a yellow tarp was draped over the vehicle’s windows.

Investigators, Carr said, did not know the identity of the woman, nor her relationship to the boy.

“First and foremost is the care of the child,” he said. “We’re going to take him to the hospital and make sure we’re not overlooking something, confirm that the child did not take any physical injuries.”

Trina Umali, 22, who lives in a house near where the car came to a rest, was at school when she got a call from her parents.

“My mom and dad are inside the house and they heard like somebody got shot and they noticed that there was a bunch of police cars coming over.”
