Frank Ocean reveals why he didn’t submit ‘Blonde’ for Grammy consideration

Frank Ocean made fans wait four years before he released the follow-up to 2012’s “Channel Orange.” Impatient fans like us weren’t happy about it, but “Blonde” was well worth the wait. Ocean’s sophomore album has topped the charts and received positive reviews from critics and listeners alike.

So why didn’t Frank, who has already won two Grammys, submit the album to be considered for this years awards? The short answer: he’s silently protesting what he calls a “dated” system of awarding, screening and nominating. He told the New York Timesthat even though the Grammys hold “nostalgic importance” he doesn’t see the Recording Academy “representing very well for people who come from where [he] come[s] from,” noting the few Black artists who have won Grammys in his lifetime. The 29-year-old said, “I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience.”

We respect his integrity. But don’t make us wait another four years for an album, Frank!
