Friend hopes to adopt orphaned boy

An 11-year-old boy who lost his family in a tragic weekend collision in B.C. may have a new home with a family friend.

Shahid Bashir and his family have known the Mahmoods for about 20 years.

They would go to each others’ homes two or three times a week and go on family picnics together. Now Bashir is hoping young Aashar will become a part of his family permanently.

“Aashar is very familiar with my sons, so he his very happy. He is not feeling that he’s alone because we are giving him our full attention and he is in very safe hands,” Bashir said.

“I am very happy and he is also very happy to stay with me for the long term. We know each other and he is happy with my family, so I think it would be good if he lived with me in the long run.”

Aashar’s parents and two sisters, along with a close family friend, died Sunday when the van they were travelling in collided head on with a motorhome.

Another family friend, who wished to remain anonymous, said the bodies of the deceased were being picked up in B.C. yesterday and would be returned to Edmonton, where funeral arrangements are now being made.
