A trio of classmates is asking students across the city to wear “anything Superman” to honour slain 17-year-old Brittney McInnes on the first day back to school Monday.
E.P. Scarlett High School student Jessica Brantnall said her friend McInnes always had Superman stickers and in the months leading up to her death made Superman the theme of her life.
“We think this would mean a lot to Brit because she loved Superman stuff so much. She wore a Superman sticker on her work tag and on her headboard. She called herself Superman, too,” Brantnall told Metro.
Brantnall, Caitlyn Bourassa and Meagan Kuzyk initially planned to appeal to Scarlett students but are now asking all students across the city to don Superman belts, stickers, shirts or even just the colours on Feb. 1.
“I think being the fun-filled girl she was, she would want us to have fun with this,” Brantnell added.
Kuzyk said the girls all miss their friend and planning this event is therapeutic for them.
“We’re all hurting, but we have each other and we planned this out of love for her,” she said.
Bradley Rietze is facing first-degree murder charges in McInnes’s death.
