Future basketball stars get trounced

Tyler Scott and Nova Scotia’s under-18 boys basketball team got a sneak peek yesterday at the challenge they’ll face at the next level.

The provincial team went up against a star-studded squad of current and former Atlantic University Sport all-stars in the championship game in Bluenose Classic action at the Tower and came up well short in a 105-72 loss.

But Scott, who just finished Grade 12 at Halifax West and is one of the top players in his age group, showed he could compete, dropping a team-high 23 points.

“I loved it,” said Scott, a six-foot-three guard who will head in August to Lee Academy prep school in Maine. “I tried, I gave my full effort, and we just came up short.”

With opponents as many as five years their senior, the game served as a good learning experience for players as they head off to college and university.

“It’s amazing how playing against that calibre of opponents bring out your strengths and weaknesses,” said head coach Nick Jordan.

“These guys have an idea of the bigger picture now.”
