Fuzz raise funds for athletes

In full uniform and flip-flops, three enforcement officers voluntarily confined themselves to Northland Wal-Mart’s roof yesterday afternoon and have vowed to stay there until Sunday.

The three women are part of the fourth annual Free the Fuzz fundraiser for the Special Olympics, and will occupy their weekend throwing candy down to shoppers, blasting music and waving from their make-shift prison in hopes to raise $25,000.

Const. Kendra Laustsen of the Calgary Police Service, Alberta Sheriff TJ Jednorog, and Rhonda Mackenzie, of the Canada Border Services Agency, all volunteered to be hoisted by the fire department’s ladder up to the roof top to pitch a tent, and will spend their days under the orange tarp and their nights playing crib and cards.

While none had complaints while the sun was out, Const. Laustsen said we “might want to check back with us on Sunday” since it’s forecasted to rain.

Rachel Ryan, one of the athletes there to collect donations and sell hot dogs, has been competing for 21 years and said “it’s awesome” to have this kind of support.

Most of the public-friendly events will be happening on Saturday afternoon.
