Get to know Mineola

The 591-bed Winthrop University Hospital, along with several Nassau County courthouses, sits squarely in the heart of Mineola. Together they provide steady traffic for a lot of smaller businesses in town, says Michael Nordon, a partner at Sir Speedy printing center (250 Jericho Tpk.). The town also offers a variety of good places to eat, including several Portuguese restaurants, says Nordon, 28.

Recent college graduate Deena Siderakis, 26, just moved home to Long Island to start her job-hunt. Her first stop, after dropping her luggage off at dad’s house in nearby Albertson, was O’Carroll’s Recovery Room Bar & Grill across from the Mineola LIRR. “I came here with my moving buddies to wait for the train and to show them where I used to come a lot three years ago before I left for school,” she says.

The bar and grill, which was recently renovated, is conveniently located next to the LIRR and a great place to hang out, she says. “This is a good station because the trains run to the city about every 20 minutes both ways, and you can get an express,” she adds.
