Ghanian qualifies for Olympics

A Ghanaian man who learned to ski six years ago in an indoor alpine centre in England has qualified to represent his small African country in the 2010 Olympics.

He’ll be the first Ghanaian to compete in the Winter Olympics.

Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong, whose nickname is the Snow Leopard, started competing in international events four years ago in an attempt to qualify for the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

He told CBC News yesterday that alpine skiing was easy to pick up because of his past experience participating in sports that required good balance.

Nkrumah-Acheampong qualified this week for the slalom and giant slalom events for the 2010 Games.
