Gilgo Beach murders: The killer’s personality profile

There hasn’t been much news about the Gilgo Beach murder this week— or, at least, no new bodies, which is a relief after a time when it seemed like every day brought the discovery of more victims.

But as the search for more evidence continues, police sources say they have drawn up a psychological profile of the killer, known only as “Unsub” (for “unidentified subject.”) According to the New York Times:

He is most likely a white male in his mid-20s to mid-40s. He is married or has a girlfriend. He is well educated and well spoken. He is financially secure, has a job and owns an expensive car or truck. He may have sought treatment at a hospital for poison ivy infection. As part of his job or interests, he has access to, or a stockpile of, burlap sacks.

Sources say that the killer is most likely very charming and personable, in order to get his victims to meet him on his terms, and to escape suspicion for so long. They also suspect that he is an “organized” killer, who methodically plots out his movements:

Organized killers use [care and caution.] They often lead seemingly stable lives, and are methodical, intelligent and educated … And, like the Ocean Parkway killer, they often have a knowledge of police work and forensic techniques.

Most chillingly, experts say that the killer likely murders for the sadistic pleasure the act gives him. They point to the mocking phone calls to one victim’s teenage sister as proof that he enjoys reveling in others’ pain:

“That gives me an idea that he is a sadist,” said [former FBI profiler Jim Clemente]. “That would be reflected in his relationship and jobs. He is the one who laughs when a cat gets run over or a kid falls off his bike. He likes the suffering of others, and he really likes it when he can cause it or witness it.”
