Gilgo Beach murders: Three more bodies found

In a startling discovery, the remains of three additional people were found today in the area around Gilgo Beach in Long Island, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer announced this afternoon. That brings the total number of dead bodies buried at the isolated site to eight. Police are currently looking for a serial killer they thought was responsible for five murders, but they now suspect is behind eight murders.

Police found four dead bodies buried at the beach in December, all young women, all who worked as prostitutes. Last week, they uncovered a fifth body buried about a mile from the first group. And just today, police, using cadaver dogs, found the remains of three more bodies.

Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old prostitute, was last seen in the area on May 1, at nearby Oak Beach. Police confirmed last week the fifth set of remains are not her.

Megan Waterman, 25, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, and Amber Costello, 27, were identified as the first four bodies found dead at the beach in December.
