It was an emotional day for Edwin and Ruth Mattheis but they said donating their ranch to the University of Alberta fulfilled a dream.
The Calgary couple, who are both U of A alumni, donated their ranch near Duchess, Alta., yesterday to be used for research.
“The University of Alberta means a lot,” said Edwin as he fought back tears. “It’s a very special piece of land.”
U of A president Indira Samarasekera said the new research area will set the school’s agricultural department to become “a global leader.”
