Glavic nabs CIS male athlete honour

Erik Glavic has added a BLG Award to his already impressive trophy collection.

The former Saint Mary’s Huskies football quarterback, who transferred to the University of Calgary in January 2009 after three years in Halifax, won the BLG Award as Canadian Interuniversity Sport male athlete of the year last night in Calgary.

Glavic, who earned a $10,000 scholarship along with the trophy, had already been named winner of the Hec Crighton Award as CIS football player of the year for the second time in his career.

The six-foot-six, 230-pound native of Pickering, Ont., led Canada West in total offence (336.1 yards per game), touchdown responsibility (20), rushing average (10.5 yards per carry), pass efficiency (181.6) and passing TDs (14).

“This is a tremendous honour,” Glavic said. “Just to think the eight of us were selected (as finalists) amongst over 10,000 CIS athletes, it’s pretty amazing. I was surrounded by very talented athletes with the Dinos last season and I can’t wait to get back on the field with them.”

British Columbia Thunderbirds women’s volleyball outside hitter Liz Cordonier was named the female BLG Award winner.
