Go my God!: Huge Pokemon Go meetup on Boston Common this Saturday

Maybe in attendance...

The game that thrust Pokemon onto our phones’ camera screens and back into the zeitgeist continues to show us just how madly popular it is.

Pokemon Go, an “augmented reality” smartphone game that lets users find and catch Pokemon while moving around in the real world, surpassed Twitter in daily active users just six days after it was released. That’s probably why, when musician and Weymouth native Kerrin Connolly created a Facebook event to gather around 50 people for a Pokemon hunt in Boston Common, she received a few more RSVPs than she expected: according to the Jul. 23 event’s page, almost 5,000 people have indicated they’re “going”and another 14,000 are “interested.”

“It just blew right up,” Connolly says. “It’s been a crazy couple of days.”

The huge influx of would-be trainers have somewhat complicated Connolly’s plans. Attendees won’t be walking simultaneously; instead, they’re encouraged to arrive and organize in the common throughout the day.

Connolly adds,”Boston Common will act as a meeting ground, you can find your teams, find your friends, anyone you feel you want to go out and have an adventure with, and then you just pack up and go for whatever destination on the map you want.”
