Green protest for Harper

Armed with a banner of 150 signatures of Albertans concerned about climate change, protesters took to Stephen Harper’s Calgary constituency office yesterday with a message.

Alex Doukas, a volunteer for Step It Up Alberta, led the charges yesterday to remind Harper about earlier comments he made about addressing climate change issues.

“I think we need to go from laggers to leaders on the issue. I think the government has let Canadians down and climate change is a global issue that needs international attention,” Doukas said, adding he would like the government to support a bill on climate change and accountability, known as Bill C311.

“We have to step up and take action. We want Canada to care. Climate change is potentially extremely dangerous and it’s critical to address it.”

Alison Longson put her signature on and support behind the 50-foot-long banner of names, which was collected throughout Alberta and Calgary, including at the Folk Festival this summer.

“I think that we need to educate ourselves a lot more on what is happening to our world. A lot of people have become too complacent on what is happening around them,” she said.
