Haida art the focus of new museum exhibit

From the reverse side of the Canadian twenty-dollar bill, to the doors of the Canadian Embassy in the United States, Haida art is everywhere.

This Aboriginal artwork is about to receive more exposure as Haida: Life.Spirit.Art opens at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Friday.

Award-winning Haida artist Robert Davidson hopes to give the public an intimate look at more than 80 masterpieces from this ancient, yet vibrant culture.

“I feel there is recognition to the art beyond our own culture…because I feel it brings the art beyond our own cultural boundaries into the western world,” said Davidson.

The collection includes 19th century cutlery and hand-carved fishhooks, which Davidson believes is the only remaining language of Haida culture. The artifacts were carefully selected by him from the McCord Museum in Montreal.

Visitors can catch the exhibit in the museum’s north salon until Jan. 23.
