The Halifax Mooseheads are no doubt glad their season series with the Moncton Wildcats is finally over.
The Mooseheads played their final game against the Atlantic Division-leading Wildcats last night at Moncton Coliseum and lost 4-2, finishing with a 1-7 head-to-head record.
Churchville native Scott Brannon scored the eventual winner, his 25th goal of the year, with 9:14 remaining. Devon MacAusland scored into an empty net in the final minute.
“It’s been a good series … Obviously, it’s been a lopsided series, but they’re a top team in Canada,” said Mooseheads head coach Cam Russell. “We’ve seen a good effort against them every time out and it’s been a good rivalry.”
Jan Stransky, with his eighth goal in six games since joining the Mooseheads in a December trade, and Jessyko Bernard, returning from a groin injury, were Halifax’s scorers.
The Mooseheads outshot the Wildcats 38-28. Mooseheads goalie Mark Yetman finished with 24 saves.
“We played well enough to win,” Russell said.
The squad is 13-29-2-2, 17th in the 18-team QMJHL.
Top-scoring defenceman Justin Pender (abdominal strain) sat out again and Matt Boland (flu) also didn’t play.
