Harper-Ignatieff meeting will either trigger or defuse summer election

OTTAWA – Stephen Harper and Michael Ignatieff sit down this afternoon for a meeting that could either trigger or defuse a summer election.

The prime minister and the Liberal leader are scheduled to meet on Parliament Hill during question period. Ignatieff has said he wants details on what Harper plans to do about employment insurance, the huge deficit, stimulus spending, and the medical isotope crisis.

If he doesn’t like the answers, he could bring the government down in a confidence vote Friday.

Harper has said he’s willing to talk, but warned there’s only so much information he can provide in such a short time.

Both men insist they don’t want a summer election.
