Harvard University said it recieved a bomb threat through email Monday, launching a bomb squad investigation that shut down most of the campus.
The Cambridge campus was one of three to reportedly recieve bomb threats Monday. Fitchburg State University and Cape Cod Community College also received threats. Fitchburg’s campus wasdeclared safe, and the Cape Cod campus was investigating it as a “hoax threat.” Cambridge Police said that because of the “specificity” of the emails, Harvard decided it would evacuate certain buildings. The bomb squad was scouring at least four buildings in search of bombs, police said. Harvard first announced the threat on its website late Monday morning.
“As most of you are now aware, we received an unconfirmed bomb threat affecting the Science Center, as well as Sever, Emerson and Thayer Halls on the Cambridge campus,” The university wrote on its website. “The buildings have been evacuated and law enforcement officials are on scene. Entry to the Yard is restricted. We will provide updates as soon as we have additional information.”
