The New York City Health Department will be releasing non-chemical larvicides into the air around marshes and non-residential sections of Staten Island, the Bronx and Queens to reduce the mosquito population as a precaution against West Nile Virus, city officials reported.
While no cases of West Nile virus have been reported, the Health Department is taking preemptive steps to kill young mosquitoes before they develop into adults.
In addition to aerial treatments, residents are encouraged to remove standing water near their homes and properly drain gutters.
The Health Department also urges residents to call 311 if they notice standing water or dead birds.
City officials advised the treatments will take place June 11, 12 and 13 between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.
