Hockey mom proves she’s an indispensable part of the team

Everyone loves a hockey mom.

Especially one who has put in countless hours of her own time for the benefit of her local association.

Wanda Schuba was named this year’s RBC Local Hockey Leader for Alberta yesterday. Schuba is one of 13 volunteers recognized by RBC Insurance, with support from Hockey Canada and the Hockey Hall of Fame.

“Wanda has played an integral part in the hockey community,” Brad Kurylyk, president of Garrison Minor Hockey, said in his nomination letter to Hockey Alberta.

“Wanda has been the backbone of this hockey club.”

Whether she’s representing teams at monthly meetings, organizing tournaments, or simply cheering on her two hockey playing sons, Schuba is never far from the rink.

“My children play in the association and I volunteer to help them have a great hockey year,” Schuba said. “I volunteer but everybody in the association contributes in some fashion, so I’m getting the recognition but we all volunteer at some point to help out our kids.”

Along with the personal recognition, RBC Insurance is donating $10,000 to Garrison Minor Hockey in Schuba’s name. Schuba said the money will go towards new equipment for the club.
